Understand there are different types of (functional) behavior assessments

Consider key elements that inform the design of the behavior assessment

Select from four behavior assessment templates to begin tailoring the "best matched" approach

Match the Behavior Assessment to the Circumstances

Adapted from the National Center on PBIS's Tier 3 Comprehensive Functional Behavior Assessment Guide (January 2022), this resource provides an efficient way to make sure the assessment is designed to match the circumstances. For students with complex or extensive support needs, this is especially important. The handout serves as a quick-start guide to behavior assessments. It includes a series of multiple-choice prompts that can be used at the start of any behavior assessment. The answers to the prompts serve to guide the team to consider one of four assessment types as the starting point. Teams using this resource will build shared understanding of the assessment elements. Having this plan will help to manage expectations for the assessment process and outcomes.
